Rockpanel external facades help transform Listed Compton Care hub

A vital regional care resource

Charitably funded Compton Care offers a range of services centred around palliative care across several sites in the Wolverhampton area. The new development is formed of a contemporary update and additions to the original c1845 historic Italianate Edward Banks designed Compton Hall with later period additions, and interior design contributions by William Morris and Co.

BAM Construction and Rockpanel

The £3m Compton Care project was awarded by tender using the Government’s ProCure 22 framework for public sector building projects. BAM Senior Site Manager Josh Prescott commented, “We were looking to move away from the previously specified copper effect aluminium rainscreen to a Rockpanel system. The solution needed to emulate an oxidised copper appearance. The wide range of surface designs and colours Rockpanel offer meant we were able to achieve the desired look while specifying a facade which outperformed competitors in terms of economy and fire safety.”

Turning the vision into reality

Rockpanel Area Sales Manager John Porter, “We held a design meeting with Josh at BAM and David Church from IDP Architects and, along with the client’s input, it was agreed that our A2 Stones Mineral Rust, and Anthracite Grey (RAL7016) designs fitted the architect’s vision. BAM favoured Rockpanel over the suggested HPL specification as it provides a superior fire classification, which was critical for the building’s intended use.” The Rockpanel scheme also satisfied requirements related to the building’s Grade II Listed status.

The ingenious angular saw tooth design of the building’s frontage creates a clever eye-catching facade, which allows light into every room whilst giving the impression it is floating above the structure’s compact footprint. The natural, organic appearance of Rockpanel’s Mineral Rust helps ground the building into its immediate surroundings and the landscape beyond. 

Rockpanel and ROCKWOOL – the perfect combination

Advanced Roofing Ltd. were responsible for the installation of this meticulous facade. Simon Cresswell of the specialist firm said, “We have worked with Rockpanel in the past on projects including at the prestigious Rugby School. John Porter checked in and was always available to offer help and advice during the installation which progressed well. We incorporated high performance ROCKWOOL DuoSlab (60mm) and RWA4 (150mm) insulation into facade construction, enhancing its thermal and acoustic performance whilst delivering the A2 non combustible fire characteristics which were a vital requirement, considering the building’s end use.”
